iPhone & iPad Stuff

Please note that while I have not disabled most of these apps from being able to run in certain desktop browsers (such as Safari and Chrome), they are designed specifically for iPhones and/or iPads. They may be somewhat functional in a desktop browser but will almost certainly not look right.

SIMPLE SCOREBOARD (for iPad)
launched: July 2010 // last major update: August 2010
email app link to your iPad

Keep score of sports and games using this simple scoreboard. Tap the team name to change it. Tap the score to increase it. Tap the minus button to decrease the score. That's all there is to it! Works best in landscape orientation.

NOTE:
Looks like an iOS update has caused issues with this app. I'm looking into it!

OTHER FEATURES:
• Quick Score Buttons: Rather than tap, tap, tapping to get to a certain score, there are buttons to quickly zero out the score and to manually choose a score to start at.
• Swap sides: If the teams change sides of the court/field/pitch, a tap will make the scores swap sides on your iPad to match.
• Custom Colors: A color picker makes changing the background and text colors to match the teams easy.
Really Custom Colors: In addition to the supplied color picker, advanced users can enter any hex color code or CSS color name to change the background and text colors. For details on what these are and to mix your own color shades check out this link.
• Automatic Saving: When you relaunch the program it will give you the option to continue where you left off last time.
• Offline Mode: You can now install this webapp onto your iPad so you have access to it even when you are not on a WiFi or 3G network! Just add it to your home screen (using the "+" button).

PHASE 10 SCOREKEEPER
launched: April 2010 // last major update: June 2010
email app link to your iPhone

No more hunting for pencils and notepads! Now you can easily keep track of the score with your phone the next time you play Phase 10! Score and phase information for two to six players can be viewed and updated after each round of play.

This web app is functional, but I still need to do some work on pieces of it. Feel free to send feedback if you use it, while I work to perfect it! App must be run from the home screen – not through Mobile Safari.

IMPORTANT ITEMS STILL TO DO:
• Save scores if you quit before finishing game or if the phone rings.
• Allow app to run when there is no WiFi or 3G signal.

COUNTDOWN TO DISNEY
launched: February 2010 // last update: April 2011
email app link to your iPhone

Originally created to answer the question my kids would ask several times a week ("How many days until Disney, daddy?"), this countdown app can now keep track of your own upcoming trip! Once you input your your Disney arrival date (within the next 1,000 days) and choose a background image, you can save the result to your home screen and access the counter anytime without having to re-enter the dates.

USING YOUR OWN PHOTO: You can use your own photo as the background for the countdown. This feature is very rudimentary at the moment. For best results you'll want to crop and resize your image to 460 pixels tall by 320 pixels wide. Ensure that the focus of the photo (faces or landmarks for example) are in the top half of the picture as your countdown will cover the bottom half. You'll also have to have a place to host the image, like a photo sharing site or space available from your web provider. Note the photo URL and you will be ready to go!

LANDSCAPE: There are mini-calendars that show the current month and the month of your arrival at Disney. You can view these by turning your phone to landscape orientation.

GENERIC COUNTDOWN: While this is primarily a Disney countdown, it can be used to count down anything. Just choose your own photo and then in the options screen choose "Turn 'Days Until Disney' Label Off".

TENNESSEE TRAFFIC CAMS
launched: August 2007 // last major update: January 2009
email app link to your iPhone

View traffic cameras from across the state of Tennessee right from your phone! With the latest real-time traffic conditions from the cameras of TDOT SmartWay, you'll always know what's happening further down the road and can plan alternate routes when necessary. Inspired by Midnight Cheese's superb Dashboard widget, Tennessee Traffic Cams is a practical app that will fit right in with the rest of your iPhone. Nashville, Knoxville, and Chattanooga cams now available.

UPDATE:
Looks like after three years TDOT has overhauled their system and changed the way the cameras on the web work. I probably won't update this app.

Some of these web apps were built using Joe Hewitt's iPhone development library and Christopher Plieger's iWebKit.
